Connor Hellebuyck was in purgatory, and now he is residing it up in Hell. It appears like he most well-liked each to Winnipeg. After 11 seasons with the Jets, the three-time Vezina-winning goalie performed his first sport for one more NHL group, incomes a win for the New Jersey Devils in Dallas on Tuesday night time.
Hellebuyck obtained to the States by forcing his method out of Manitoba, and the 33-year-old’s standing because the President’s favourite participant, a playoff choker, and a potential tender-in-decline as he comes off his worst season for the reason that starting of his profession all serve to mood the joy of his transfer to Jersey. However goalie was a gap that the Devils desperately wanted stuffed, and the modest package deal they despatched in return—principally the 20-goal scorer Dawson Mercer and the child they drafted twelfth total this yr, Alexander Command—means they need to be a greater group immediately.
The stress is actually on Jersey to indicate some actual enchancment. After a promising first-round playoff win over the Rangers in 2023—their first collection win since advancing to the Stanley Cup Remaining in 2012—a mixture of accidents and plateaued kids have saved the Devils from making any actual noise. It was speculated to be a brand new period for Jersey when Jack Hughes and his fellow children broke out, however to this point the group’s most essential gamers have but to show they’ll lead a contender. Nonetheless, there are causes to be optimistic about their depth, if not their top-end expertise. Raiding Nashville for the all-around stable Luke Evangelista, who’s nonetheless obtained a excessive ceiling at simply 24, was maybe my favourite transfer of the offseason, whereas one other winger, rookie Amadeus Lombardi, is one in all my prime newcomers to observe for causes which might be solely about 80 p.c associated to his title. (His siblings are Symphony and Ulysses, by the way in which.) Essentially the most obvious weak spot has been in objective, with Jacob Markström failing to be the reply within the final two seasons. So the buyck stops right here.
With the Devils at full power and Hellebuyck in objective on Tuesday, it was laborious to see them as something however a critical risk. The skaters made it quite simple for the brand new arrival, constructing out a 3-0 lead within the sport’s first half whereas severely limiting Dallas’s alternatives to attain. Although the Stars’ pretty flukey second-period deflection objective served as a slight pace bump, the highway group nonetheless cruised to a 5-1 victory. Hellebuyck confirmed no rust regardless of his prolonged separation from Winnipeg, throughout which he was understanding in Michigan beneath less-than-ideal circumstances, and his 17 saves have been greater than sufficient for the Jersey boys’ fourth straight win. All of them on this mini-streak have come pretty decisively in regulation, and the Devils are actually 8-4-0 on the yr.
“I believed the fellows in entrance of me performed an ideal sport for me to get acclimated. A low quantity of photographs, blocking the whole lot, protecting the whole lot to the surface. They let me contact the puck rather a lot,” the goalie stated within the postgame. “You may observe touching it and feeling good with the palms, however it’s all about rapid selections, checking and having a play already picked earlier than you even get the puck. So, I touched it as many occasions as I might simply to work by it.”
“For positive our worst sport of the season,” Stars coach Glen Gulutzan stated. “However they have been good, too.”
Hellebuyck is adjusting socially in addition to bodily to his new office. Per The Athletic, on simply two hours’ discover he made it to his new group’s Halloween get together in Hoboken, carrying an ATM outfit—doubtless a reference to the truth that he was lacking his paychecks whereas he sat out.
“He not solely looks as if he’s in midseason type however looks as if he’s been right here a very long time,” Devils coach Sheldon Keefe stated. “He’s obtained an amazing degree of confidence, for good cause: He’s earned that.”
In the meantime, with profession minor leaguer Clay Stevenson in web (although that’s undoubtedly not the one challenge), the Jets misplaced their sixth straight on Tuesday, falling 5-1 at house to the Panthers. They will welcome the Devils to their rink very quickly, with “Screw You, Connor” night time scheduled for Nov. 10.
