Stephen Thompson is getting his want for a retirement combat in Madison Sq. Backyard and this was one thing {that a} prior opponent of his prayed for. The fighter in query additionally had a basic UFC welterweight title combat with him within MSG.
The combatant in query is Tyron Woodley, who was requested for his ideas on ‘Marvel Boy’ having a particular retirement want, previous to Thompson’s combat with Charles Radtke being confirmed for UFC 334, Woodley stated [via Bowks Talking Bouts],
“Marvel Boy is my brother, man. He was the hardest. He was the hardest coaching camp I ever had. I had to herald some people who was from my period, Sage Northcutt and Raymond Daniels and Avery Plowden and Chris Spang. These 4 guys collectively introduced 4 various things to the desk. Chris was extra of a MMA well-rounded man, however he had the karate, sport preventing background.”
“Raymond Daniels was a man that got here from the identical background, the one man that basically efficiently ever beat Marvel Boy. He additionally did MMA. Plowden was the present champion within the sport that they got here from. Sage Northcutt was form of just like the hybrid the place he was identical to the genetically made person who’s like simply zero physique fats and simply cardio for days. I by no means actually gained a spherical in opposition to Raymond. It took me weeks to win something in opposition to Sage outdoors of the wrestling and grappling.”
“I needed to put on taekwondo chest pads and physique protectors or he would have broke my ribs with sidekicks. So, I put myself in probably the most grueling coaching camp and it was simply so mentally irritating to not perceive it. However, I discovered that I understood what he would do if I bought handed his authentic, preliminary, preliminary assault. Most individuals by no means made it previous that assault. So, what occurred if he missed a step off sidekick? What’s he going to do subsequent?”
“He going to do a spinning and again kick. What occurs if he do that and and I get handed, hey, he’s going to do that. So, I discovered the mindset of them, how they prepare. Had I not performed that coaching camp, I spent a fortune. I believe I spent six figures on cost, coaching, touring, flights, meals, weight loss plan, coaches, to have the ability to beat him twice. That had I not performed that, he would have beat me. I believe it was shut. It was shut with me doing all of that.”
Stephen Thompson carries himself like Khabib and GSP, per Woodley
Additional delving into his broader historical past with Stephen Thompson from their days as opposing rivals to being co-stars at the moment, Woodley continued [via Bowks Talking Bouts],
“Think about if I didn’t do any of that? I simply went in there cocking like, “Ah, f**okay that karate s**t. Imma beat his ass. I most likely would have misplaced, you already know what I imply? So, I might like to see him go on the market. I might have liked to see him get that title. Simply because I felt like once I was on the high, he was so near me. He was proper there. I had him improper, man. I had him learn improper and I’ve apologized since. We did a film, Highway Home 2 collectively.”
“It regarded like we bought to do some re-shoots, so we’re going to be again out in London once more collectively. I actually bought to know him on a complete totally different degree. He’s only a lovely human being, inside and outside, man. Like the identical method Khabib [Nurmagomedov] and them are disciplined, that’s a bushido spirit of a martial artist however his spirit as a martial artist is so pure. It’s like Georges St. Pierre yet again. I’m simply delighted each time I’m round him.”
“He’s an amazing martial artist. He’s an amazing particular person. Yeah, I need to see him stroll away nonetheless he need that. If it’s in Madison Sq.; it’s loopy as a result of my display saver on my laptop behind me is Time Sq.. All I’m doing is watching it as we discuss. Yeah, if that’s the way in which he need to stroll away, I pray that the UFC could make that occur and it aligns with no matter they bought deliberate. Yeah, he’s a stable dude.”
