One of the vital essential questions for racing to reply because it appears to be like towards the long run is tips on how to get the youthful era and concerned within the sport. Whereas many various concepts and theories are popping out of that query, the excellent news is that racing’s youngest fanbase carries lots of pleasure to be a part of it.
That was evident Sept. 18-19 when a number of younger racing followers took benefit of a singular expertise. That have was not essentially coordinated by the operators of Belmont Park and Parx Racing, however it nonetheless ended up being a house run.
The brand new Belmont Park opened Friday after three years of development. Whereas that was an occasion in itself, the cardboard was additional bolstered by the truth that the New York Racing Affiliation determined to host the historic Jockey Membership Gold Cup Stakes on the Friday afternoon card and the race attracted world celebrity Perpetually Younger.
Whereas some on-line have been crucial of NYRA’s resolution to carry opening day and the Jockey Membership Gold Cup on a Friday, that call was praised by many East Coast racing followers as it might not influence their skill to additionally attend the Pennsylvania Derby Saturday at Parx on the Keystone State’s greatest day of racing.
“Initially I used to be a bit wired about it and was like, ‘Man, I will have to decide on one or the opposite,’ ” mentioned Dalaney Spidle, a 19-year-old racing fan from Carlisle, Pa. “However then I noticed I may go together with my associates, and we are able to all carpool collectively. That might make it quite a bit simpler.”
There have been many acquainted faces at Parx Saturday that have been seen at Belmont Friday, making the most of having two main race days on the identical weekend inside comparatively shut proximity. The 2 tracks are positioned about 2 1/2 hours aside with Belmont on Lengthy Island in Elmont, N.Y., and Parx in Bensalem, Pa., simply exterior Philadelphia.
The very best information for racing, although, is that fairly a couple of of these acquainted faces are from the youthful era and had a real pleasure for the weekend highway journey.
Twenty-year-old Sam Boyer of Berrysburg, Pa., mentioned that the Belmont/Parx double labored completely for her as she likes to continually be on the go. She didn’t initially have tickets for Belmont and had been planning on simply the Pennsylvania Derby, however when the chance opened to get a ticket, and her associates, together with Spidle, have been going, she jumped on the alternative to hitch in.
“Each time I am right here, I am thrilled,” Boyer mentioned of attending racing in particular person. “I’ve a blast being on the rail cheering. I make my very own enjoyable.”
Friday’s card at Belmont was additional particular for Boyer as the primary two races have been gained by coach Shug McGaughey. Boyer’s father has been a McGaughey fan because the Eighties, and it was when he gained the 2013 Kentucky Derby with Orb that basically drew Boyer into the fandom herself.
“You are a part of historical past at that time. As somebody who loves the historical past of American horse racing, it was actually cool to be part of it,” Boyer mentioned of being on the new Belmont’s opening day. “Seeing Shug win the primary two races at Belmont was actually essential to me. I cried a bit.”
Opening day was additionally essential to attend for Sammy Roseman, a 19-year-old racing fan from Cherry Hill, N.J. Roseman’s grandfather and uncle have at all times been huge racing followers, which led to Roseman watching the Triple Crown annually. In 2017, he researched the place Kentucky Derby winner All the time Dreaming was going to run subsequent following a loss within the Preakness Stakes. He then found the colt was focusing on the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park in New Jersey, nearly an hour away.
All the time Dreaming ended up not operating within the Haskell, however Roseman and his father, Ira, nonetheless made the journey to see Girvin win an exhilarating version of the Haskell. The expertise bought Roseman and his father even deeper into the game, Ira having since joined a number of partnerships proudly owning Thoroughbreds.
Roseman was in attendance at Belmont Park when Justify gained the Triple Crown in 2018 and had made many journeys on the observe’s greatest racing days prior to now.
“It was actually essential to me personally,” Roseman mentioned of being at Belmont’s opening day. “I grew up going to Belmont and to see the transition into a brand new period, it was particular for me to be there. Rising up, I bought to see Justify win the Triple Crown, I bought to see all the massive days there. To see the transformation was actually essential.”
In the meantime for Spidle, the push to attend Belmont was extra for the horse than the observe. Perpetually Younger to be particular. Spidle’s deep curiosity in racing has come extra lately than Boyer and Roseman. A horse lover since she was younger, she adopted racing right here and there however has grow to be extra concerned over the past yr because the launch of the online game Umamusume: Fairly Derby. The Japanese recreation’s human characters are based mostly off real-life racehorses.
Many Umamusume followers made the journey to Belmont to see Perpetually Younger, though Spidle mentioned she had fallen in love with the horse earlier than taking part in the sport as he started racking up wins the world over. His presence was one other reminder on how a lot weight a star racehorse provides towards drawing racing followers.
“If he wasn’t there, I do not assume I might have went,” Spidle mentioned. “I like Perpetually Younger.”
Perpetually Younger was additionally an enormous draw for Roseman.
“It actually did elevate the day,” Roseman mentioned. “To see a horse like that who’s accomplished globe-trotting all all over the world and profitable all of the premier races, for him to be there on opening day will at all times be particular. I’ve at all times needed to see Perpetually Younger.”
Whether or not it was the observe opening or Perpetually Younger that drew them to Belmont, Parx was additionally calling the following day because the observe is native to all three. And, after all, they needed to attend their house observe on its greatest day of the season.
“It is vitally distinctive,” Roseman mentioned of the flexibility to do the Belmont/Parx double. “Going from new Belmont to Parx, which is my house observe and I find it irresistible, it is nice. I used to be trying ahead to it.”
By being at each tracks, it additionally gave them the expertise of interacting with totally different gamers inside the sport. Boyer is an enormous fan of jockeys and enjoys accumulating their autographs and having the ability to work together with them. By attending consecutive days at totally different tracks, it gave her the chance to satisfy two totally different units of riders.
Nevertheless it’s not simply seeing the celebrities of the game that’s thrilling the youthful era. All three additionally get pleasure from doing their share of betting on the home windows. Spidle mentioned the races are a bit extra thrilling when these exactas hit, whereas Boyer retains a pocket book monitoring all of her bets, percentages, and returns.
So, in an period that’s centered totally on gaining followers via on-line means, this weekend was one other reminder that there’s nothing fairly just like the on-track expertise to get younger followers intrigued.
“I do actually love the horses, I like to get to see the horses,” Spidle mentioned. “Horses are positively my ardour. Earlier than I used to be into racing, I used to be into horses. I used to be a bit horse lady as a child. The exactas once they hit are nice, however even when I do not guess a race, I nonetheless have lots of enjoyable seeing it.”
“There’s nothing like going to see an enormous day. I inform everybody that,” Roseman mentioned. “There’s nothing like going to the Haskell, PA Derby, the Belmont, Derby, Preakness. It isn’t solely concerning the race however, as a fan, you get to see all the opposite premier races on the cardboard.”
And maybe there is a chance to be present in what Belmont and Parx by accident created: an thrilling weekend of high-level racing deliberate at two shut racetracks quite than piling the tracks’ huge occasions onto the identical Saturday.
“It will be cool if Laurel had an enormous day, after which Parx had an enormous day, simply to maintain it native,” Roseman mentioned. “Followers like me would wish to go to each days, see two totally different tracks, two totally different environments. It is actually cool.”
In BloodHorse’s “On the Observe” month-to-month column, Sean Collins takes a take a look at a number of the distinctive experiences, occasions, concepts, services, or hospitality choices racetracks throughout the nation are utilizing to assist improve attendance, experiences, wagering, and connections with racing followers new and previous.
